Here are 5 useful skills every guy should learn during NYSC

Typically after the mandatory NYSC service, the next logical action is to get a well paying job. To get better chances of a job offer, you may need to know people who can submit your resume for advertised job positions or people who can provide information on unadvertised job offers. Most mouth-watering job offers are rarely publicized.
Networking with the working class can give you major advantage over job seekers who solely rely on online job boards and newspapers.

Fortunately, networking is a skill that can be learnt. You can begin harnessing this great skill with these examples.

  • Create a Linkedin profile and start building your professional online presence. Add as many professionals as you possibly can. Don’t spam.
  • Start creating interesting conversation with people you meet.
  • Make new and diverse friends everytime you have the opportunity to do so.
  • Develop a habit to getting peoples contact (phone number, social media) at first meeting.
  • Frequently keep in touch with your contacts. Send Christmas or Ramadan messages to them. Call frequently if you can.

I’d recommend a very good book. How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie.

Profitable skill

Your NYSC period is the best time to learn a profitable skill or trade. This is because you will have time to learn and practice. Things you can learn include

  • Fashion design
  • Branding/T-shirt prints
  • Trading
  • Photography
  • Baking and pastries
  • Handy man
  • Events planing
  • and many more.

The goal is to discover, learn and master a profitable skill. This would be helpful to earn a living while you are in search of a job after NYSC. Don’t be surprised if you do this full time eventually and never have to work for anyone after your NYSC.

Hardly would I see a woman who doesn’t like a guy more if he knows how to cook. This is the number one self sufficient skill I know for any guy. My cooking skill has been a great advantage after my service year. This skill often intimidate my girlfriends because they cannot leverage our relationship with home made food. My friends always wanna come around my house for great food. This makes my bachelor life more enjoyable.

Advanced computer skills

Learning additional computer skills during your NYSC could give you an edge over job applicants. The more resourceful you are, the more valuable you will become to any employer. Here are some additional software skills that could earn you side money, job offer or even a living.

  • Image editing (Photoshop)
  • Video editing
  • Excel
  • Logo designs
  • Animations
  • Microsoft word

NYSC is a great period for self discovery and self image branding. You have time to read self development books and/or listen to self development audiobooks. This period is the perfect time to know what you want to do with your life and start doing so immediately.
